ISLAMABAD: The government has set a target to produce about 6.138 million tonnes of meat during the current financial year (2024-2025) to meet local requirements and for export.
Meat production during the last financial year was recorded at 4.35 million metric tonnes, an official of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research said.
Speaking to APP here on Friday, he said the production targets for beef during the review period have been set at 2.719 million metric tonnes and meat at 835,000 metric tonnes.
During the last financial year, over 1,973 metric tonnes of beef was produced locally against the set targets of 2,630 million metric tonnes, while mutton production was recorded at 613,000 tonnes against the set targets of 817,000 tonnes, he added.
During the current financial year, poultry production targets were set at 2.583 million metric tonnes as against production of 1.772 million metric tonnes during the same period last year, he added.
It is worth noting here that during the financial year ending June 30, 2024, more than 123,516 metric tons of meat and meat products worth $511.688 million were exported compared to exports of 99,892 metric tons worth $425.605 million.
The export of meat and meat products recorded an increase of approximately 20.23% in the monitored period compared to the export of the same period last year. Meanwhile, the country earned $3,410.286 million by exporting 200,709 metric tonnes of fish and fish products during the last financial year, which was recorded at 214,542 metric tonnes worth $496.565 million during 2022-23.
