ISLAMABAD: On the International Day of Democracy, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed commitment to democracy and called for greater inclusiveness and justice in the world. Democracy Day has been celebrated every year on September 15 since 2007, and this year’s theme is the importance of artificial intelligence as a tool for good governance. On this occasion, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for using the benefits of artificial intelligence while mitigating its risks. Expressing his commitment to democracy, President Zardari said that the solution to national problems lies in a vibrant and inclusive democratic process. “We commemorate Democracy Day to emphasize the importance of democracy in empowering citizens and promoting their active participation in the political process,” he said in a message issued by the Presidential Palace. This year, he said, the global theme highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence in supporting good governance. “AI has the potential to increase transparency, accountability and efficiency in public administration, making it a key tool for modern governance. AI can provide data-driven insights and thus make the democratic process more transparent and accessible to voters by sharing important information about candidates and their policies ,” he added. President Zardari emphasized that democracy means people’s participation in the political process, political pluralism and their rights. He added that the defense of citizens’ political, economic and social rights distinguishes it from other forms of government. “As we observe this day, we also recognize the role our Parliament plays in protecting democracy by representing the will of the people, formulating public policy and addressing the nation’s most pressing challenges. It is the primary forum for redressal of grievances, ensuring inclusiveness and promoting a resilient future for Pakistan,” the President said. He said that it is through democratic principles that Pakistan can achieve equality, socio-economic justice, rule of law and freedom of expression. The President emphasized that as Pakistan faces current challenges, it is very important to strengthen democratic institutions, implement reforms and work together to consolidate democracy. “Let us recommit ourselves to uphold democratic values and ensure that democracy continues to flourish in Pakistan,” he said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz in his message reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to democracy, constitutionalism, rule of law and human rights on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy.
