Miami: Argentina overcame Lionel Messi’s injury absence with a 2-0 win over Peru in Miami on Saturday in the Copa America.
Lautaro Martinez scored twice at the Hard Rock Stadium to secure Argentina’s place in the quarter-finals as Group A winners.
Argentina made nine changes to their starting XI at the Hard Rock Stadium after Messi complained of right leg pain and coach Lionel Scaloni was suspended for one match.
But despite the different form, Argentina were always in control against a disappointing Peru who only conceded one goal in a one-sided game.
Martinez’s first goal came just after half time. Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese calmly held off the Inter striker to take the lead after Angel Di Maria’s strike.
Argentina doubled their lead in the 72nd minute when Jesus Castillo conceded a free kick.
But Leandro Paredes hit the woodwork to make it 1-0.
Martinez then grabbed a second in the 86th minute before crossing for Galles to take a long lead.
Replays showed that Martinez appeared to set up defender Aldo Corzo, but referee Cesar Ramos waved off Peru’s resistance and the goal stood.
“It was difficult in the first half because they defended deep, but the first goal opened the game,” Martinez said. “We need many more to come.” Martinez has now made four consecutive appearances for Argentina, adding to his hot streak.
