The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new portal for the registration of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
Consultations were held with stakeholders, including the Ministry of IT, PSEB, and representatives from the Pakistan IT Association, on the matter of registering unregistered and unauthorized VPNs as part of PTA’s VPN Registration Framework.
A PTA spokesperson stated that a secure process has been introduced for VPN registration. According to PTA, users can now register their VPNs through a new online platform. The framework is designed for IT companies, freelancers, and other stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted access to legal and registered VPNs.
Additionally, the importance of VPNs for secure communication was acknowledged during the meeting, while concerns about potential misuse for illegal activities were also reviewed.
PTA emphasized encouraging companies and freelancers to register.
It is noteworthy that Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are used when certain websites or applications are blocked in the country. In August, PTA began tightening restrictions on VPN usage, aiming to limit access to the already restricted microblogging platform ‘X’.
