ROLAND GARROS: French Open champion Stan Wawrinka beat Andy Murray 6-4 6-4 6-2 in the first round of Roland Garros on Sunday.
The defeat could be Murray’s last Grand Slam appearance.
A long hug and heartfelt chat was shared online with Wawrinka, who praised Murray in a press conference shortly after the match.
“We’re getting close to the end, and we’ve played it many times over the last 20 years,” Wawrinka said.
“A lot of emotions.” “Being in Chatrier’s night session is something I’ve never been able to do. He (Murray) is a good person, a good player, a good fighter.
Wawrinka called the straight sets win his best match of the year.
“I feel good. I move well. I play aggressively. I like the situation. I’m very happy with the performance and level. It’s really positive for me.”
Meanwhile, Murray said his results at Roland Garros could have been different if he hadn’t played against the likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Wawrinka, but he was proud of what he did.
“Yes, I’ve been good here for many years. “Yes, most players will subscribe to my results here. I played the final, I think four and a half, and I made the quarters, I don’t know how many times, maybe twice. Yes, I lost half the tournament, five to Novak, five to Stan , twice to Rafa.
“In another era, the result would have been a little different. But yes, I am proud of the results I got here. I had good memories. As you can know, it was not easy for me. But I always made a strong performance and it was in mind. It’s been good for years here.”
