Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Chairman Maulana Fazlur Rehman has expressed his support for the Madrasah Registration Act.
A delegation of MQM-P led by consultant Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui met Rehman at his residence in Islamabad. The delegation was attended by Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Farooq Sattar and Amin-ul-Haq.
In the meeting, the leaders discussed the current political situation of the country and issues related to the Madrasah Registration Act.
Addressing a joint press conference, Rehman thanked the MQM-P delegation for their visit and said, “We are grateful to the MQM-P leadership for listening to our position.”
He criticized the government for creating a problem with the 26th Amendment, which deals with religious seminars, and said, “The law issued by Parliament is violated by the President. We require newspaper notification. Amendments can then be made.”
Rehman said MQM-P has agreed to defend its position “there is a feeling that MQM-P will advance our position.”
Dr. Siddiqui said MQM-P has also raised the issue of local body elections, and the need to strengthen grassroots democracy. “We aim to ensure basic democracy,” he said.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori said, “The government has proposed to transfer madrassas to the Ministry of Education. We have even brought in the education minister to resolve the issue,” he said.
Rehman stressed the importance of moving forward with the legislation and said, “The madrassa movement should be recognized as it is and the discussion should continue without creating unnecessary obstacles.”
Dr Siddiqui said, “Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s argument on the Madrasah Registration Act is logical and we will support it based on this achievement.”
