SHIGAR: Mountaineer Murad Sadpara, who led the K2 clean-up expedition this year, has died after sustaining serious injuries while returning from Broad Peak, the Broad Peak Rescue Team confirmed to Geo News on Monday.
A rescue team that left base camp today arrived at camp one and confirmed Sadpar’s death.
Days after successfully retrieving the body of Hasan Shagri, a climber who died last year, from the extreme height of K2 and bringing it to the base camp, Sadpara embarked on another expedition to the summit of Broad Peak with a Portuguese climber.
On the way, the Portuguese climber became ill and the pair decided to return to base camp.
Unfortunately, Sadpara was seriously injured on the way back after a rock hit him on the head at Camp One.
Sadpar’s body has been taken to the Japanese camp and will be shifted to the base camp by 2 pm today from where it will be transported to Skardu by an army helicopter, rescue sources said.
Two more climbers arrived at base camp by helicopter. The four members of the rescue team left the base camp at 1:00 a.m. on Monday.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep grief over Sadpar’s passing while also expressing deepest condolences to the mountaineer’s bereaved family members.
The President acknowledged Sadpar’s achievements in mountaineering and prayed for his forgiveness and strength for his grieving family.
Last year, Sadpara brought down the body of an Afghan climber from Camp Three.
The 35-year-old climber spent his time mountain climbing in the summer and driving tractors in the winter. He has three daughters and a son.
