Once Waseem asked from Hameed: “What is most favourite dish/recipe of your mother?
Hameed thought for a while. Then with tears in his eyes, he replied:
“Left over curry and bread is most favourite recipe/dish of my mother.”
Waseem was surprised over the reply of Hameed, he questioned: “How it is that?
Hameed answered:
“I have thought a lot. The scene of the last twenty years went through my mind but I never heard that my son was very keen today so I made such and such a dish. I have never heard that. In the past twenty years, only these voices were heard.
I have prepared ‘biryani’ as my son likes it
I have prepared ‘karrahi meat’ as my daughter likes it.
I have prepared such and such a thing that my brother or sister likes it.
I have prepared such and such a thing that my husband likes it.
And sometimes one person in the house would say that I want to eat rice today and the other would say that no, I want to eat vegetables today, so mother would prepare separate meals for both of them.
When you asked about my mother’s favourite dish today, I started thinking about what my mother cooked for herself in the last twenty years!!
Nothing at all. My only desire was that I would eat whatever was left over from my son or daughter.
And sometimes she would say that son, pour more and eat until you are full. There is a lot of curry left. Whereas if there had been no curry, I would have finished it.
Later, I would have found out that mother went to bed hungry today.
