Over 75% of women in Pakistan suffer from calcium deficiency, and there is a lack of awareness about taking care of their health. Calcium deficiency is leading to an increase in diseases like bone fractures and brittleness.
A theater play titled “Chona Lagake” was presented at the Arts Council of Pakistan under the sponsorship of a local pharmaceutical company, aiming to raise awareness about calcium deficiency in women. The play was well-received by doctors and healthcare professionals. According to doctors, more than 75% of Pakistani women are suffering from calcium deficiency.
The play highlighted how calcium deficiency in women leads to bone fractures and brittleness, and how it can create domestic discord due to women being unable to perform their household and office duties effectively.
Gynecologist Dr. Shaheen Zafar stated that women in Pakistan face numerous health issues, with calcium deficiency being at the forefront. This deficiency leads to bone and joint problems, but many women are unaware that they are suffering from calcium deficiency and that it can be addressed with supplements.
Dr. Zafar also mentioned that repeated pregnancies contribute to calcium deficiency, causing bones to weaken, which results in frequent fractures in older age. She emphasized the importance of women taking care of their health as a mother’s health directly impacts the well-being of the entire family. Strong bones, joints, and muscles will create a stronger family.
Major General Dr. Shehla Baqai, Dean of Bahria University, pointed out that women often lack the awareness to care for their health. Many do not realize their calcium deficiency until they experience a bone fracture. She noted that 75% of Pakistani women suffer from this deficiency, largely because many women prefer soft drinks with meals, which hinders digestion. She advised drinking water or lassi, as lassi provides calcium.
Dr. Baqai further recommended that young girls adopt a calcium-rich diet and take supplements to prevent bone fractures in old age.
The organizer of the play, Mohsin Shiraz Ali, said that their dream is to create a healthy society, not only physically but mentally as well. The aim of presenting the play “Chona Lagake” was to raise awareness among women about their health.
Professor Dr. Sumbul Sohail from Ziauddin Hospital emphasized the importance of such awareness campaigns, especially to inform young girls about how to address calcium deficiency. To prevent this, it is crucial to consume milk, cottage cheese, and take calcium supplements.
She explained that an adequate amount of calcium is essential for bone health and proper functioning of the body. Calcium is abundant in foods such as milk, yogurt, cheese, sesame, bone marrow, leafy greens, almonds, beans, especially soy, and shellfish. Regular consumption of these foods can help prevent calcium deficiency.
She also mentioned that symptoms of calcium deficiency include muscle and leg pain, frequent fractures, dental problems, a sensation of needles pricking the body, and fatigue.
