NOUAKCHOTT: Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Gazouani extended his lead in the West African country’s presidential election, provisional results showed on Sunday.
Gazouani, a 67-year-old former army chief and defense minister expected to win the race in the first round, had won 55.05% of the vote by 1040 GMT, based on results from more than 71% of polling stations. , displayed on the election commission website.
His main challenger, anti-slavery activist Biram Dah Abeid, was third with 22.87%, and Hamadi Sidi El Mohtar of the Islamist party Tewassoul was third with 12.99%.
