LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an ultimatum to Punjab government regarding appointment of judges.
Chief Justice Shehzad Ahmed Khan presided over the hearing on the Punjab government’s appeal to transfer the LHC Anti-Terrorism Court 1 to a different court in Rawalpindi.
During the proceedings, the Punjab Advocate General told the court that the government committee had consulted the Punjab Chief Minister on the issue of appointment of judges and they would be prioritized in the upcoming cabinet.
However, Chief Justice Khan expressed his displeasure at the lack of immediate action and asked about the next cabinet position.
The chief justice said the special cabinet should be summoned or brought before the court after the governing committee completes its work.
In response, the lawyer said the matter would be resolved at a Cabinet meeting scheduled for Friday.
Expressing displeasure at the absence of the government committee in the court, Chief Justice Khan said it was disrespectful.
The Attorney General promised the presence of the committee within half an hour after receiving the court summons.
Finally, the court ordered the Punjab chief minister and his cabinet to issue a notification regarding the appointment of the judge before the next hearing.
The court also warned that the Chief Minister of Punjab should be present in the next hearing if he fails to warn.
Addressing potential problems, the advocate general said the government did not oppose the names nominated by the judiciary to appoint judges.
As a result, the case was adjourned to May 24.
