Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten opened up about the Men of Green’s T20 World Cup 2024 chances on Thursday.
The event will see 20 teams from across the US and the West Indies compete for the title on June 1.
Pakistan are looking to win their first T20 World Cup since their lone victory in 2009 after undergoing a major overhaul in the past few months.
“It’s an exciting time for Pakistan cricket with the new administration and players pushing for strong results,” said Kirsten, who achieved India’s 50-over World Cup success in 2011.
“However, success will require collective efforts, wise planning and unwavering mutual support.”
In last year’s 50-over World Cup in India, after losing five of our team’s nine matches, poor performance led to Babar Azam’s removal as captain in all formats.
Pacer Shaheen Afridi was named captain of the T20 side, but Pakistan lost 4-1 in New Zealand in January, prompting Babar to regain white-ball cricket as his side drew 2-2. against their opponents.
“As a captain, I have always valued Shahi’s contribution and we will continue to consult him for important decisions.
Our goal together is to make this team the best in the world.”
After losing to Ireland, Pakistan won 2-1 in Dublin, losing a four-match series against the reigning T20 champion England in the new coach Kirsten’s first time in charge.
Kirsten is among the other changes in Pakistan, including the appointment of Simon Helmot and David Reid as fielding coach and minder coach respectively ahead of the World Cup.
Pakistan has named a 15-man squad for the tournament and includes pacer Haris Rauf, who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury since February.
Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Saim Ayub and Usman Khan have all been selected to play the T20 World Cup in other teams.
Pakistan are in Group A of the World Cup and will begin their campaign against the USA on June 6. Three days later, they will host rivals India in one of the most anticipated matches.
