Kaindy Lake is located in Tian Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan, close to country’s largest city, Almaty. It can be truly termed as idyllic mountain lake which was created due to an earthquake in 1911. The earthquake resulted in a major landslide creating a natural dam. The valley was filled with rainwater and a lake emerged as a result.
The submerged forest of Kazakhstan’s Kaindy Lake is an amazing natural sight located at an altitude of about 2,000 meters above sea level. Pine trees trunks are still visible above the clear water of the lake.
Hikers, photographers and divers consider the blue-green water and these submerged “towers” as a unique location for them. Surreal beauty and unique ecosystem of the Kaindy Lake are very popular.
It is an interesting fact the despite the pine trunks are under water at the bottom of Kaindy Lake for more than a century but surprisingly they are preserved due to the low temperature of the lake. They seem to be ghosts of a forest frozen in time.
