Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) organized an event for print media journalists to mark the commencement of Phase 1 plantation drive at Margalla View Point. The event aimed to promote biodiversity and ecosystem regeneration within the Margallah Hills National Park.
Chairperson IWMB, Rina Saeed Khan, highlighted the importance of preserving biodiversity in the National Park. She emphasized that the Board is committed to converting the concrete structures into greenery as per the Supreme Court’s order.
The event featured a tree plantation ceremony, where journalists and students planted trees with their names. This initiative is part of a larger campaign that will continue until March and gain momentum during the spring season.
IWMB has partnered with WWF Pakistan and the Ministry of Climate Change to rewild and re-green the Viewpoint with local species, including Chir pine, amaltas, and sanatha. The plantation drive has already begun, with trees like Chir pine, sanata, kachnar, and amaltas being planted at the site.
IWMB plans to invite the public, including school children, teachers, trekkers, diplomats, and judges, to join the campaign and promote community involvement in conservation efforts. The Board will commence Phase 2 of the project after securing funding and completing the preparation and approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
