Tanah Datar: Rescuers recovered more bodies from floods and cold lava flows on Indonesia’s Sumatra island over the weekend, the country’s disaster agency said.
Heavy rain that lasted for several hours caused large volcanic rocks to engulf one of Indonesia’s active volcanoes in two of the worst areas on the island of Sumatra, flooding roads, houses, and mosques.
“According to reports, the number of victims of the disaster has reached 50,” said Abdul Muhari, the news agency’s spokesman.
He said 27 people were still missing, 37 people were injured, and 3,396 people were evacuated from the affected area.
Suharyanto, who went by one name, said the death toll could rise and called for heavy equipment to be deployed to help in the search.
“Information will continue to grow. Heavy equipment must enter as quickly as possible to find the missing (victims)”.
He said the search was crucial, with six days being the “golden time” for rescuers to find survivors.
