DELHI: The mastermind of a stampede by Hindu preachers that killed 121 people this week was handed over to the police on Friday, the preacher’s lawyer said, following a police investigation.
Devprakash Madhukar has been named as the prime suspect by the police in the first report registered in connection with the attempted murder of the accused. Police have announced a reward of 100,000 rupees ($1,200) for information leading to his arrest.
A.P., self-proclaimed godman Bhole Baba’s lawyer. Singh said Madhukar was the main organizer of a Hindu religious event in a village in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, attended by about 250,000 people. Local authorities only allowed 80,000 people to attend.
“Deli has surrendered. We are not looking for anticipatory bail,” Singh told reporters. He denied any wrongdoing by the event organizers and said that Devprakash was being treated in hospital after the attack.
“I am sure that all those who created the chaos will not be spared,” Reuters news agency told ANI.
