LAHORE: Lahore Police released Imran Riaz Khan after a local court acquitted him in a fresh trial a day earlier.
Riaz was arrested late Tuesday at Allama Iqbal International Airport for money laundering.
Pictures of the journalist’s detention showing him wearing Ihram going to Saudi Arabia for Haj went viral on social media and PTI demanded his release.
Police sought a seven-day remand in the hearing before the Model City Magistrate Court on Wednesday.
Prosecutors said the candidate borrowed 0.25 billion from the complainant but never returned the money. After hearing the arguments of both parties, the trial judge Muhammad Kamran Zafar reserved his decision and allowed the police to remand Riaz for a day.
The judge acquitted the presenter of fraud charges in his ruling on Thursday.
However, Riaz was registered at the Sarwar Road police station and arrested in a separate case of police interference after he allegedly vandalized a barrier near Lahore Airport.
Today, the candidate appeared before Chief Justice Hafiz Kashif, with advocate Mian Ali Ashfaq and Rana Maroof appearing as his counsel.
Prosecutors are seeking 10 days of physical custody for Riaz “because the rest of the accused need to be arrested”, according to the applicant’s testimony.
The trial judge dismissed Riaz after hearing arguments from both sides and considering the case.
In a written order, a copy of which is available on Dawn.com, the judge said “there is nothing on record to show that the accused was driving at the time of the incident”.
He observed that no witness statement was recorded.
“There is no evidence on record to show that accused Imran Riaz Khan used assault or criminal force to prevent him from performing his duties as a public servant,” said the judge, who was silent on how the record was posted. obstructing the duties of civil servants.
The judge found the evidence against Riaz “insufficient” and ordered his release unless he is wanted in another case.
