ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Tuesday announced a two-day public holiday for Muharram 9 and 10.
The Prime Minister is pleased to declare 16th and 17th July 2024 (Tuesday and Wednesday) as public holidays on the occasion of Ashura (9th and 10th Moharram 1446 AH),” a notification issued by the Cabinet Department said.
Muslims around the world will be watching the religious event with sorrow and grief.
In this regard, the government has also approved the deployment of Pakistan Army and Civilian Armed Forces (CAF) across the country as a security measure during Muharram.
A Home Ministry notification said the details of the deployment of the troops, which will be deployed indefinitely, will be finalized with the authorities concerned, including the governments of Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Islamabad.
In addition, the announcement stated: “The date of withdrawal of the said deployment requirement will be decided after mutual consultation of all parties involved.”
It is pertinent to know that the provincial governments, including Punjab, have asked the federal government to suspend social media platforms for a week to curb the spread of hate material on the internet.
However, the federal government has not yet taken any decision to suspend internet services during Muharram and any decision in this regard will be taken in consultation with the provinces, according to a statement issued by the home ministry today.
