LAHORE: The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore is undergoing extensive renovations to bring it up to the standards of the Dubai Cricket Stadium. The ambitious project aims to improve the spectator experience and improve facilities ahead of hosting the Champions Trophy in Pakistan early next year.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has planned to renovate three major venues in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi. Foreign companies have submitted design proposals for these improvements. The future of the Gaddafi Stadium was discussed in detail at a recent meeting in Lahore. It was decided to renovate the stadium to give spectators an unobstructed view of the match, similar to the experience of watching at the Dubai Cricket Stadium.
One of the main changes included moving the hospitality box closer to the ground, as the current one was too far back. Also, there is an agreement to increase the seats in Imran Khan and Fazal Mahmood stadium to accommodate more fans. The plan also includes installing a large screen, subject to availability, to enhance the game day experience.
Another major change involves the main building of the stadium, where the rooms currently used by the directors will be demolished. This will be moved to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) or Cricket House. This step is aimed at optimizing the space and providing better facilities for the audience.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said it is important to improve spectator facilities and ensure uninterrupted viewing of matches. Naqvi is currently in England to watch his fourth T20 international, and may be in the US to watch the World Cup match on the cards. After he returns, talks will continue on the modernization of Karachi and Rawalpindi stadiums.
