Mexico City: Four people were killed and 15 injured when a stage collapsed at a campaign rally for Mexican presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez on Wednesday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said.
On the social media platform X, the current governor of Nuevo León state Samuel Garcia reported that “four people died and 15 were injured” in the incident.
Maynez said at a rally in San Pedro Garza that he was not injured in the crash.
“I am fine and in contact with the authorities,” he wrote in X about the incident, adding that his priority was to care for the victims.
He did not say how many people were injured but said members of his team were taken to hospital for treatment.
Footage of the crash, released by local media, showed a large screen at the Maynez rally where he was overthrown.
The 38-year-old centrist from the People’s Movement Party nominated for the presidency in the June 2 vote, but trailed the front-runner Claudia Scheinbaum and the opposition presidential candidate Xochitl Galvez.
