HUNZA: Intense heat and persistent rainfall have caused flooding in the Hunza river, creating an emergency situation in Faizabad village, Gilgit.
The sudden surge of water washed away two swimming pools, hotels and houses, severely damaged citizens’ property and forced them to relocate.
The situation is dire as the 13 kV main transmission line electric pole is also at risk, which if compromised could lead to a major disaster affecting the power supply of the region.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Water and Power Department is making every effort to secure the threatened power pole to prevent widespread blackout. Local authorities work tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents.
The local government has requested help from federal agencies and humanitarian organizations to support affected families and restore basic services.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected areas and evacuation measures are being implemented to prevent further harm to citizens.
Efforts are underway to provide temporary shelter, food and medical care to those displaced by the floods.
This event calls for coordinated efforts to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacities in vulnerable areas such as Gilgit-Baltistan, as it serves as an important reminder of the frequency and severity of extreme weather events that are becoming more widespread.
