A new study claims that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements may help protect people from cancer.
Researchers discovered that participants with higher levels of omega-3 had lower rates of colon, stomach, lung, and other gastrointestinal cancers. Similarly, higher levels of omega-6 were linked to reduced rates of 14 different types of cancer, including brain cancer, melanoma, bladder cancer, and more.
Yucheng Zhang, a PhD student and lead researcher at the University of Georgia’s College of Public Health, stated, “These findings suggest that the average person should focus on maximizing the intake of these fatty acids in their diet.”
The study relied on data from more than 253,000 participants in the UK Biobank Research Project. As part of the project, participants completed dietary questionnaires and had their health monitored over several decades.
