Wellington: In New Zealand’s Parliament, some members protested a bill by performing a dance.
In a video, New Zealand’s youngest Member of Parliament, Hana Rawhiti Maipi-Clark, can be seen emotionally opposing the bill presented in Parliament.
Maipi-Clark tore up the bill and began performing the traditional Māori haka dance, after which other members of the assembly and people in the gallery joined in. This led the Speaker of the House to adjourn the session.
Foreign media reports indicate that the bill presented in New Zealand’s Parliament related to the reinterpretation of the 1840 Treaty concerning the rights of the indigenous Māori people of New Zealand. Maipi-Clark opposed it.
It is worth noting that 22-year-old Maipi-Clark is also of Māori descent, the indigenous people of New Zealand who have lived on the land for thousands of years, long before European settlers arrived.
