ISLAMABAD: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Pakistan and the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) will hold a scientific forum on Wednesday (July 10) to focus on combating lightning
drought and improving early warning systems.
This forum is part of the ECHO-funded Pilot Program Partnership (PPP) led by FAO.
The partnership aims to incorporate anticipatory measures into disaster risk management (DRM) in Sindh province, focusing on drought-prone areas such as Tharparkar, Umerkot and Dadu. The aim is to build local capacity and integrate pre-action protocols into government DRM plans to increase resilience to climate shocks.
The forum will feature experts from around the world to discuss new methods such as the South Asian Drought Monitoring System (SADMS) and Earth Observation-based Drought Indices adapted for Pakistani agriculture. These presentations aim to improve decision-making for practitioners and guide humanitarian efforts in anticipatory drought preparedness actions. Discussions will also cover the use of dynamic vulnerability indicators and satellite data to improve forecasting accuracy and inform early humanitarian responses.
