The European Competition Commission has fined Meta €780 million.
The fine was imposed due to Facebook Marketplace’s violation of European regulations.
In a statement released by the European Commission, it was revealed that Meta linked its advertising service, Facebook Marketplace, to its social network, Facebook, and imposed unfair commercial terms on other online advertising service providers.
Margrethe Vestager, head of the Commission’s competition policy, stated that the fine was imposed because Meta tried to maintain a dominant position in online display advertising.
She said that Meta took advantage of Facebook Marketplace, leaving other advertising services unable to compete.
She added that this was illegal under European Union competition laws, and Meta would need to review its behavior.
On the other hand, Meta announced that it would appeal the decision.
According to the statement, the Commission’s ruling ignored the realities of the European online classifieds market.
It further stated that the fact is people use Marketplace because they want to.
