Islamabad: Prime Minister’s Climate Change Advisor Romaina Khursheed Alam has said that the government, in collaboration with all provincial governments, is taking every possible step to combat the hazards of plastic for public health protection.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Climate Change, Romaina Khursheed Alam stated that all provincial governments are collaborating with the federal government to implement the Prime Minister’s plastic-free vision practically.
Romaina Khursheed Alam emphasized the necessity of reducing plastic usage for environmental improvement, citing a recent study on microplastic pollution’s global impact on human health and the environment.
She mentioned that according to the study’s findings, countries in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are at the forefront of the global list in terms of per capita consumption of microplastics.
The Prime Minister’s Climate Change Advisor for Climate Change Award mentioned that measures to safeguard underground water from the harmful effects of plastic are also essential.
Romaina Khursheed Alam suggested that replacing single-use polyolefin plastic materials with modern biodegradable alternatives could help in reducing the discharge of microplastics, especially in packaging materials and beverages.
