During a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Food Security, officials from the Ministry of Food informed on Thursday that an agreement has been reached with China for the export of donkey hides and bones. Under this agreement, a Chinese company will manage all related operations in Gwadar, where a donkey slaughterhouse has also been established.
The ministry officials stated that a deal has been made with China regarding donkey hides and bones, and the operations in Gwadar will be handled by a Chinese company.
The chairman of the standing committee inquired why live donkeys were not being exported to China. In response, the ministry officials explained that exporting live donkeys is a complicated process.
Requests for donkey slaughterhouses are also being received from other parts of the country. Officials further mentioned that discussions with new Chinese companies regarding donkey slaughterhouses are ongoing.
One member of the standing committee pointed out that the significance of donkeys in Pakistan is declining as loader rickshaws have largely replaced them for transportation. He suggested that efforts should be made to breed high-quality donkeys.
During the meeting, discussions also took place regarding the breeding of ducks, in addition to donkeys.
