DESPICABLE ME 4 is a story about a man trying to protect his family. Gru (Steve Carell) met at Lise Pas Bon, his alma mater from 1985. And Gru didn’t just go to socialize and hang out with his classmates. He was sent by the Anti-Villain League (AVL) to find Maxime Le Malle (Will Ferrell), who has transformed himself into a spider and has a dangerous plan. After much trouble, Gru, Minions, and AVS agents manage to capture Maxim. Maxim is detained in a high security prison and still manages to escape. Before running away, Gru sends a message that he will avenge his pain with his family. Retired AVS director Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan), brought back for a job, asks Gru and his family to move into a warehouse in the sleepy, upscale town of Mayflower. Gru, his wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), and children are given new identities and skills. Trouble ensues when Gru’s neighbor, Poppy Prescott (Joey King), recognizes Gru and begins blackmailing him. Maximus, on the other hand, moves heaven and earth to find Gru. What happens next forms the rest of the movie.
The story by Mike White and Ken Daurio is fantastic. Mike White and Ken Daurio’s screenplay is filled with many interesting and surprising scenes that fans of the franchise will love. The dialogue is funny.
Chris Renaud’s directions are simple and have a few extra points. First of all, the movie has a running time of only 95 minutes, but there is a lot going on. There are several tracks running simultaneously – Gru trying to blend in the new town, Maxim trying to find Gru, the kids adjusting to their new lives, Lucy struggling at work, the neighborhood kids adding to Gru’s troubles, etc. Minions also have a trail. In fact, the latter does not accurately reflect the narrative. However, they are the lifeblood of this series and contribute to its success. Maxim’s arrest, chasing Lucy in the supermarket, Gru’s youngest child scaring him in the car, Gru’s heist in the second half, etc.
