With the general elections just two weeks away, a police officer was killed Thursday in an armed attack on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regional office in Turbat, Balochistan.
According to police, an exchange of fire occurred when unidentified armed persons attempted to enter the ECP office of the provincial election commissioner in Turbat.
During the confrontation, a police officer named Namrooz sacrificed his life in the line of duty, foiling the insurgents’ plot.
After failing to access the ECP office, the armed guys threw a hand grenade inside. Fortunately, no one was wounded in the blast. Meanwhile, the unidentified armed guys fled the scene unchecked.
After being notified, police and law enforcement agencies hurried to the location to conduct investigations.
The incident occurred a day after Balochistan caretaker Chief Minister Mir Ali Mardan Khan Domki paid a visit to Turbat to examine the preparations being taken to ensure the region’s general election is conducted transparently.
Domki stated on the occasion that the administration was dedicated to safeguarding the security of candidates participating in the polls as well as maintaining law and order in the province in order for the election to be held peacefully.
He went on to say that the caretaker setup had improved the actions taken to maintain peace and order during the voting process.
