The truth behind the claim made by Member of the National Assembly Abdul Qadir Patel, regarding the statistics presented in the meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior, should be brought to the public’s attention.
Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Central), Abdul Wasi, expressed serious concerns over the statement prominently published in a well-known provincial newspaper on January 7. According to this statement, Member of the National Assembly from the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, Abdul Qadir Patel, claimed that statistics presented in the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior revealed that 99% of federal secretaries, including 22,000 bureaucrats, hold dual citizenship. While addressing a meeting of the provincial media cell at Jamaat-e-Islami’s provincial headquarters, Markaz Islami Peshawar, Abdul Wasi stated that if these figures, presented by a responsible individual in an important forum, are accurate, it is extremely alarming. The people who have access to national security secrets and sensitive government files have pledged allegiance to another country. He emphasized that this is a highly sensitive issue and patriotic political forces and parties should take it seriously. He pointed out that while there is a condition for election candidates to not hold dual citizenship, there are no such restrictions on the top level of bureaucracy, which is a matter of grave concern and a point of reflection.
