In response to directives from the Sindh Health Department, Civil Hospital has initiated echocardiograms for pregnant women. A groundbreaking study by a Pakistani female doctor has revealed key reasons behind the increasing maternal mortality rate during childbirth.
Did you know that in Pakistan, a pregnant woman dies every 50 minutes? But why? The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) has released a shocking study on pregnant women.
Professor Saba Bhatti, a Pakistani doctor, has stirred the medical world with her research, now published in the European Science Congress and the American College of Cardiology.
The study found that most women suffer from heart weakness during pregnancy. According to Professor Bhatti, head of Cardiac Imaging at NICVD, out of 20,000 tests, 4% of women experienced heart muscle weakness during childbirth.
Maternal deaths are not limited to rural areas but are also rising in urban regions. Many first-time mothers, experiencing difficulty breathing or other complications, consult only gynecologists and avoid seeking advice from other specialists.
Dr. Shazia Ahmed, a cardiologist at Civil Hospital, stated that following this groundbreaking study, every pregnant woman at Civil Hospital is now undergoing heart tests, and the program will soon be expanded to other hospitals.
