Lima: At least 16 people were killed when a bus overturned in the mountainous region of Ayacucho in Peru on Tuesday.
The bus was carrying more than 40 passengers in the Andes, where such disasters are not uncommon.
Ayacucho Viber Vega officials told reporters that 13 bodies have been recovered and three more have yet to be recovered from under the bus. “Yes, 16 people died,” he said.
Vega said the rain slowed the recovery of the rest of the crew.
The health ministry said in a statement that the bus left Lima for Ayacucho on Tuesday morning.
The bus rolled down the slope.
Such incidents occur frequently in Peru because, among other problems, drivers speed on poorly maintained roads.
On April 30, at least 25 people were killed when a bus crashed into a ravine in the Cajamarca region.
According to the Ministry of Transport, a total of 3,138 people were registered in road accidents in Peru in 2023.
