ADELAIDE: With Shamar Joseph, Kavem Hodge, and Justin Greaves slated to make their Test debuts against Australia, the world champions of test cricket, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite is emphasizing discipline above all else to his youthful players.
Only five players from the two-Test series between Australia and the West Indies last summer are expected to start for the Indies. The remaining seven players, which include three debutants, have a combined Test score of just 15 and include Tagenarine Chanderpaul (eight), Gudakesh Motie (four), Alick Athanaze (two), and Kirk McKenzie (one). Joshua Da Silva, the wicketkeeper, is the fourth-most experienced player for the West Indies and has played 24 Test matches, which is the same as Australia’s least experienced player, Cameron Green.
Only 13 Tests separate Brathwaite’s team from playing 100, and he believes his team can compete with Australia if they can stay disciplined for extended periods of time.
Brathwaite stated, “All I want to see from the team is fight.” “Obviously, the best squad we are up against is our opponent, but I think we can still improve. Everything comes down to discipline: as a bowling team, how long can we maintain discipline? Obviously, we don’t want to go in fours and fives. Everything is therefore achievable as long as we can exercise self control and clearly post partnerships on the board. However, we must put in a great deal of effort and have confidence in ourselves.”
