RAWALPINDI: Pakistan white ball captain Babar Azam has eclipsed the legendary Imran Khan’s record as the most successful captain in the history of the Green Shirt in terms of wins.
Azam, 29, has 79 wickets as a bowler, second only to Wasim Akram, after guiding Pakistan to victory in the ongoing five-match T20I series against New Zealand.
Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to its only World Cup title after defeating England in the final at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 1992, holds the top spot with 89 wins as a bowler in 187 matches.
Wasim Akram, who replaced Babar and Imran in 1999 and 2003, led Pakistan in two World Cups in 1999 and 2003.
Misbah-ul-Haq and Inzamam-ul-Haq are fourth and fifth respectively, while Sarfaraz Ahmed, who guided Pakistan to the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 after defeating India in the final, is the sixth most successful captain in terms of wins. 61 wins in 100 games.
Naqvi and the selection committee found that the 2924-year-old is best suited to lead the Pakistan cricket team in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
After the conclusion of the 2023 ICC World Cup, Shaheen Shah Afridi took over in the shorter format and Shan Masood became the Test captain, while the ODI captain was not announced.
Shaheen only led the team in one T20I series against New Zealand in January 2023.
