Lima: At least 25 people were killed and more than a dozen injured when a bus plunged into a valley on a mountain road in northern Peru.
Local official Olga Bobadilla told RPP radio that the accident happened late Sunday on a potholed dirt road in the Cajamarca region of Andam province, and the bus was 200 meters (about 650 feet) deep.
This payment is updated at the end of the day between 23-25.
City Hall official Jaime Herrera said the bus with more than 50 passengers was washed ashore and some of those on board were washed away.
Rescue workers and firefighters are at the scene of the accident, and the injured have been evacuated to hospital.
The municipality of Celendi declared 48 hours of mourning as dozens of people gathered at the police station near the crash site to receive messages from their loved ones.
Last year, more than 3100 people were registered in road accidents in the country.
Authorities are investigating whether the bus is roadworthy.
