ISLAMABAD: The federal government has approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Civilian Armed Forces (CAF) across the country as a security measure during Muharram.
According to a notification issued by the home ministry, the government has sought deployment of the army to maintain law and order during the month, which began on Sunday.
The notification said that the details of the deployment of the troops, which will be deployed indefinitely, will be finalized with the authorities concerned, including the government of Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Islamabad.
In addition, the announcement stated: “The date of withdrawal of the said deployment requirement will be decided after mutual consultation of all parties involved.”
It is pertinent to know that the provincial governments, including Punjab, have asked the federal government to suspend social media platforms for a week to curb the spread of hate material on the internet.
In a meeting of the Cabinet Standing Committee on Law and Order, the government has decided to suspend social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram from 6/11 Muharram, in accordance with a letter from the provincial home ministry.
