ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Tuesday expressed concern over the role of President Arif Alvi and said he would face a double trial for “violation of constitutional mandates”.
Speaking to the media outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Bilawal said one case relates to the president’s controversial decision to dissolve the assembly amid a no-confidence motion, while the other relates to his failure to convene a session of the National Assembly as prescribed by the constitution.
“President Arif Alvi’s actions represent a flagrant disregard for constitutional obligations,” Bilawal Bhutto said. “If the president neglects his duties, it is up to the president to uphold constitutional integrity. The office of the presidency extends beyond the individual who holds it.”
Bilawal Bhutto, who oversaw adherence to constitutional processes, rejected the notion of impeachment and suggested that a new president should be elected through an established electoral process.
“The Constitution mandates the meeting of the National Assembly on February 29 under all circumstances,” he reiterated.
Stressing the need for political reconciliation, Bhutto highlighted the involvement of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the process initiated by Asif Zardari. He emphasized the importance of redressing historical injustices and cited the upcoming Bhutto reference decision as a key step towards closure.
“Politicians must prioritize mutual respect and cooperation,” declared Bilawal Bhutto, warning against undermining democratic institutions. “Failure to respect each other will perpetuate the cycle of discord for generations.”
Bhutto reflected on political strategies and defended his party’s decision to engage in political alliances despite lacking a government mandate. “We chose stability over indifference,” he affirmed, acknowledging the economic and democratic consequences of political instability.
Addressing concerns about alliances, Bilawal Bhutto argued that pragmatic decisions were made in the interest of the population. He thanked the Sunni alliance for its cooperation and emphasized the need for joint efforts in solving societal challenges.
Assessing the province’s performance, Bhutto praised Sindh’s resilience in the face of adversity, particularly highlighting the education sector’s response to natural disasters. He criticized the approach of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), called for humility in admitting mistakes and reiterated his commitment to constitutional principles.
