Allegations of Corruption in CPEC Corridor Road Maintenance Charges — Public Urges Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Take Immediate Notice. Residents of Tehsil Ghazi have expressed serious concerns over alleged illegal collection of millions of rupees under the guise of road maintenance charges within the CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) zone. The public has appealed to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to take immediate and serious notice of the matter. According to public complaints, a specific contractor has been collecting hefty amounts from transporters on a daily basis for the past two years. However, no transparent documentation or official record of these transactions has been provided by the relevant authorities.

Sources reveal that currently, three different types of taxes are being collected from vehicles passing through the CPEC corridor in this area:

1. Minerals Department Tax: PKR 430 per vehicle, a formally sanctioned tax

2. Local Tax on Services: PKR 600 per vehicle, with proper official documentation

3. CPEC Corridor Road Maintenance Charge: PKR 400 per vehicle, being collected by a contractor, without any official record with the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) Ghazi

The public claims that this third charge is entirely illegal and being used as a front for alleged corruption, amounting to millions of rupees on a monthly basis. They further pointed out that the dilapidated condition of roads and absence of basic infrastructure in the area are clear indications of misuse of collected funds.

When contacted for comment, TMO Ghazi Umar Hayat Khan clarified:

> “The Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) has no connection whatsoever with the PKR 400 tax being collected under the name of the CPEC Corridor. This matter is currently under inquiry by the Assistant Commissioner Ghazi, and we fully support the ongoing investigation.”

Social and civil society groups have reacted strongly to the issue, demanding the formation of a high-level inquiry committee to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the contractor’s performance, financial records, and the legality of the imposed charges. They insist that those found involved in illegal practices must be brought to justice. Local leaders and citizens have collectively appealed to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Chief Secretary, and the Anti-Corruption Department to take urgent and serious action to ensure justice and to protect the rights of the public from financial exploitation.
