ISLAMABAD: A one-day seminar on Islamic Criminal Law was held at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in connection with the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The keynote speaker was the Secretary, Chief Justice of Pakistan, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mushtaq. The event was hosted by the dean of the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies, prof. Dr. Mohyuddin Hashmi.
The event was attended by faculty members and senior staff. During his speech, Dr. Muhammad Mushtaq gave a detailed explanation of the criminal laws before and after independence.
He also discussed the Indian Penal Code and the post-1977 period, laws related to Hudud, Qasas and Diyat, as well as the establishment and services of the Islamic Ideological Council and the Federal Sharia Court.
Dr. Mushtaq said criminal laws must be harmonized with Islamic teachings. Dr. Mohyuddin Hashmi said that a conference on the objectives of Shariah will be held soon to which Dr. Muhammad Mushtaq to express his views.
He said that the faculty had started a series of keynote addresses in Islamabad for which 100 topics had been selected out of which 23 were delivered.
Chairman of the Sharia Department Dr. Hidayat Khan thanked Vice Chancellor, AIOU, Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood for his full support in organizing this seminar. Dr. Hidayat Khan said that this seminar has a connection with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the university.
