SWAT: A total of 24 people including 18 women were killed in the name of honor ,during the last 9 months in Swat district. All 27 accused involved in these incidents have been arrested.
District Police Officer (DPO) Swat Badshah Hazrat Khan said that 16 cases of honor killings have been reported during the last 9 months. In these incidents, a total of 18 women and 6 men were killed in the name of honor, added that the police have registered cases of all these incidents and have also registered Section 311 along with Section 302 of murder, which is included in the FIRs for honor killing.
He said that these incidents have taken place in the limits of different police stations of Swat. The police arrested all the 27 suspects involved in these incidents and registered cases against them and presented formal challans in the courts.
“In response to a question regarding the reasons for not punishing the accused involved in honor killings, Mr. Badshah said that because there is mutual consent in honor killings, due to which the accused sometimes get benefit, added that the police take full action in the cases of honor killings and sometimes the police registers the cases on their own behalf if there is no plaintiff,” he said.
He further said that in many cases, the police initially receives a report of suicide, but later when the investigation is conducted, it is proved to be an honor killing and the police then registers a case in their own complaint.
DPO Swat Badshah Hazrat Khan said that during the months from January to September, a total of 119 people were killed while 129 people have been injured in various disputes and personal enmity.
“The cases of all these incidents have been registered and the accused have been arrested and the cases are under hearing in the courts while in most of the cases the accused have been punished,” he said.
He said that 6 incidents of suicide have also taken place during this period and according to reports, 6 people including 4 women have lost their lives.
Irfanullah Babak, chief executive of the non-governmental organization The Awakening, working on women’s rights, said that according to his statistics, a total of 43 women have lost their lives in Swat district. Out of which 27 women have been killed while 12 people including 9 women have been killed in the name of honor and 4 cases of suicide have been reported.
