Instagram has increased the maximum length for Reels from 90 seconds to 3 minutes. This change was announced by Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, who revealed that users had been complaining that 90 seconds was too short.
Interestingly, in July 2024, Mosseri had stated that Instagram wouldn’t focus on longer videos, as doing so could disrupt the platform’s core principle of connecting users with their friends. However, Instagram introduced the longer video feature after TikTok was banned in the U.S.
TikTok had been offering its users the option to post 3-minute long videos since 2021. Instagram has been slowly increasing the duration of Reels, with the 90-second limit introduced just two years ago. At one point, Instagram even experimented with a feature allowing users to post 10-minute Reels, but development on that feature was eventually halted.
