If TikTok fails to sell its operations in the US by January 19, a law signed by President Joe Biden in April 2024 will result in a ban. According to the law, TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, must sell its assets in the US within the specified time or face a ban. If the app is banned, new users will be unable to download or install TikTok, while existing users will be redirected to a website with further information about the ban. The law does not mandate this complete shutdown; rather, it requires the app to be removed from US app stores. However, existing users will still be able to use TikTok, but updates will not be available. ByteDance may give users an option to download their data. A Supreme Court decision this week will determine whether the ban will be enforced or delayed. There is also the possibility that ByteDance will sell TikTok’s operations to another company at the last moment. Earlier, Microsoft had attempted to buy TikTok, and Elon Musk is reportedly among the potential buyers.
