Located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the historical city of Nagasaki, Hashima Island is situated in southern Japan.
Japanese authorities discovered coal in Hashima Island in 1810 after which it became habited.
It is often referred to as the “Hell Ship” or “Gangup”.
However, coal mining in the island began in the late 19th century and it soon became the most populated island in the world. It seemed to be a densely populated city to buildings located so close together.
But, in 1974 the coal mining on the island stopped after which its inhabitants left the place. Since then, the island was lying deserted and its buildings have been destroyed over time.
Currently, the island presents a charming and eerie sight. High rise buildings, roads and other structures are reminiscent of a city that was once very prosperous…
Hashima Island’s interesting history and its deserted state have attracted a large number of the tourists from Japan and other parts of the globe as well.
