If you are using a 10-year-old Android phone, it might be time to upgrade, as WhatsApp will no longer be supported on these devices starting January 1, 2025. Meta has decided to end WhatsApp support for older Android phones, specifically those running Android KitKat (Android 4.4) or earlier.
According to reports, smartphones running Android KitKat or older operating system versions will lose access to WhatsApp starting January. Meta has been continually improving its user interface and privacy settings, introducing features that are compatible with the latest iOS and Android operating systems. This is why support for older systems is often discontinued.
Meta is also working on newer features, including those powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), which require more advanced hardware. As of now, about one percent of Android smartphones still run older operating systems.
Some of the older smartphones that will no longer support WhatsApp include:
- Samsung Galaxy S3, S Note 2, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola Moto G (first generation), RAZR HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
If you are using one of these older smartphones, you will need to transfer your WhatsApp data to a new device, as all media and chat history will be deleted after January 1.
Earlier, Meta also announced the discontinuation of WhatsApp support for older iOS versions, with support being limited to iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later starting May 2025.
