LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that the government’s plan to amend the constitution is tantamount to burying the constitution. Speaking to the media after the court hearing on Monday, the veteran politician paid tribute to JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for not supporting the constitutional amendment. “I ask all political parties to thoroughly study the draft amendment before voting on the draft amendment,” he said. Amendment of the constitution is a serious matter and should not be taken hastily, he said. Qureshi said the bill should be submitted to the National Assembly to ensure transparency in the process. The lower house should discuss the constitutional amendment, he added. “Your grandfather made the 1973 constitution with consensus but you are burying it,” Qureshi said while addressing PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He also called the proposed amendment an attack on justice. “The basic structure of the constitution would be changed by this amendment,” said the seasoned politician. He added that the parliament is incomplete without allotment of reserved seats to PTI and an incomplete parliament cannot amend the constitution.
