Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar told the National Assembly on Monday that the controversial “constitutional package” has not yet been submitted to the federal cabinet. The package is a set of constitutional amendments, one of which will aim to fix the tenure of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) for three years. The legislation was earlier expected to be tabled in the National Assembly and Senate today after the government failed to table it as originally planned over the weekend despite a frantic effort to garner the required support. Tarar said on the floor of the lower house that the proposed changes “have not yet been submitted to the federal cabinet as a proposal nor in the CCLC (Cabinet Committee for Disposal of Legislative Cases)”. According to the procedure, a constitutional amendment must first be approved by the federal cabinet. While the Senate meeting scheduled for 12:30 PM was convened today and was later adjourned, Radio Pakistan reported, the NA session began around 1:00 PM.
