Islamabad: The National Press Club (NPC) Carrom Tournament 2024 concluded with a thrilling final, where the team of Izhar-ul-Haq Khan Niazi and Tauseef Abbasi emerged victorious. They secured their win after a hard-fought battle against Rizwan Khan Mamoon and Raja Zafar, who finished as runners-up.
The event was graced by Dr. Sohail Aftab, Director of Public Relations and Spokesperson for the National Highway Authority, who served as the chief guest. Dr. Aftab presented shields and cash prizes to the winning teams. The first prize was awarded to Izhar-ul-Haq Khan Niazi and Tauseef Abbasi, while the second prize went to Rizwan Khan and Raja Zafar. The team of Shakeel Paswal and Zahid Mashwani secured the third position.
In recognition of their excellent officiating throughout the tournament, referees Daud Ahmed and Ashar Chaudhry were honored with the Best Referee Award.
The event saw a large turnout of journalists and players, including NPC President Azhar Jatoi, Secretary Nayyar Ali, Finance Secretary Waqar Abbasi, and the tournament organizer and NPC Governing Body member, Naveed Sheikh.
The tournament, played on a knockout basis, featured participation from 19 teams. Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony, Dr. Sohail Aftab highlighted the significance of Carrom, noting its origins in the Indian subcontinent and its recognition on the international stage, with August 23rd celebrated as World Carrom Day. He commended the NPC leadership for organizing such healthy recreational activities for its members and encouraged other sectors and institutions to promote this sport.
NPC President Azhar Jatoi reaffirmed the club’s commitment to providing welfare and recreational opportunities for its members, a tradition that will continue. Secretary Nayyar Ali praised the efforts of Naveed Sheikh, who organized the Carrom tournament with selfless dedication, bringing vibrancy to the press club. He emphasized that the NPC sports room hosts year-round activities, fostering a healthy environment for journalists.
Finance Secretary Waqar Abbasi echoed these sentiments, attributing the tournament’s success to both Naveed Sheikh’s leadership and the enthusiastic participation of all players.
On this occasion, NPC Carrom Club Vice President Rana Zahid also paid tribute to the efforts of Naveed Sheikh and called for more such activities to ensure that journalists continue to have access to healthy recreational opportunities.
