ISLAMABAD – Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan’s top leader Mustafa Kamal says Pakistan cannot move forward under current capacity payment conditions and is calling on the government to scrap agreements with local independent power producers (IPPs).
Speaking to the media after a visit to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Wednesday, he highlighted rising power costs as the biggest problem facing the country, noting that little effort has been made to ease the burden on the masses.
Kamal claimed that the country has a capacity of 43,000 MW, but despite this huge potential, the problem of load shedding has remained unsolved for many decades.
“The matter has worsened with rising electricity bills,” added the former mayor of Karachi.
Regarding IPPs, Kamal said that a huge amount of public money is being spent with little return to the system, which has created problems for the overall state of the economy.
He said capacity payment agreements with local IPPs need to be scrapped as billions of rupees of taxpayers’ money have been wasted on this front.
