Justice Aalia Neelum has been appointed as the Chief Justice (CJ) of the Lahore High Court (LHC), sources said on Tuesday.
The judge was unanimously nominated by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) in a meeting chaired by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Faez Jesus.
Justice Aaliya is third in the LHC seniority list after former LHC CJ Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan and Justice Shaheed Bilal Hasan were appointed to the Supreme Court.
After the elevation of Justice Shahzad, Justice Shujaat Ali Khan was appointed as acting chief justice by President Asif Ali Zardari under Article 196.
Meanwhile, Justice Shafi Muhammad Siddiqui was also unanimously nominated as the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court (SHC).
The seat fell vacant after former SHC CJ Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi was appointed as high court judge along with Justice Shahzad and Justice Shahid earlier this month.
Justice Alya: a brief overview
Hon’ble Justice Miss Aalia Neelum was born on 12th November 1966 and completed her LL.B. in 1995 from Punjab University. A year later he was registered as a lawyer.
He also practiced as an advocate in the high court after his registration in 2008.
Since being appointed to the LHC bench in 2013, the learned counsel has delivered several judgments on various important issues.
According to her academic background, Justice Aalia has done Masters in Political Science from Punjab University and Diploma in various subjects of Law and Judiciary. In addition, he received his B.Ed degree from his mother.
In addition to dealing with criminal, civil, and anti-terrorism law, Justice Aalya has focused on gender-based violence trials, among other works.
