Ogyakarta: Chinese player Zhang Jhijie died after collapsing on the field in the Asian Championship in Ogyakarta, Indonesia.
Badminton Asia expressed its condolences on Monday following the death of the 17-year-old player.
“Badminton Asia, PBSI and the organizing committee are deeply saddened and express their deepest condolences to Zhang’s parents, family and the Chinese Badminton Association,” it said.
The Indonesian National Olympic Committee expressed its deep sorrow over Zhang’s death.
The Chinese Badminton Association told the state-backed China Newsweek news agency on Monday that they were in contact with the Indonesian side over the issue of whether Zhang had received timely medical attention.
In India, P.V. Olympic silver and bronze medalist Sindhu called Zhang’s death “heartbreaking”.
Sindhu, who did not compete, wrote on X: “My deepest apologies to the Zhang family at this devastating time.
“The world has lost a great talent today.”
